The Highest-Paying Occupations in the United States
March 8, 2026
Every year, BLS OEWS data gives the clearest available picture of which occupations pay the most. The list is dominated by a predictable cast — physicians, executives, lawyers, and senior tech workers — but the details in the data are worth examining closely.
Consistent Top Earners
These occupations appear at or near the top of national wage rankings year after year:
- Physicians — most specialties hit the top-code cap
- Chief Executives — base salary only; total comp is higher
- Lawyers — especially in BigLaw and major markets
- Software Developers — strong demand pushes wages up nationally
- Financial Analysts — especially in major finance markets
- Financial Managers
The Top-Code Problem
BLS suppresses wages above $100/hr ($208,000/yr) — meaning the published 90th percentile for physicians, surgeons, and some executives shows "$100.00+/hr" rather than actual earnings. The real distribution at the top is hidden by this cap, which understates earnings for the highest-paid occupations.
Where to Look Beyond the List
The highest national median doesn't always mean the highest actual earnings in your market. Browse California, New York, or Washington occupation data to see how top-tier market wages diverge from national medians.
