Arts, Design, and Media Salaries: Creative Industry Compensation

September 22, 2026

The Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations group is one of the most internally varied in BLS data — spanning photographers, graphic designers, film directors, TV producers, athletes, and journalists. Wage distributions in this group are among the widest of any occupational category.

Design Occupations

Graphic designers, UX/UI designers, and web developers in design roles sit in the middle tier of this group. UX designers who work in tech companies increasingly fall into a compensation tier that approaches software engineer wages — particularly in the major tech markets. Art directors and creative directors earn above the designer median.

Film, TV, and Digital Media

Production roles in film, television, and streaming (now concentrated in California and New York, with growing shares in Georgia and New Mexico) span from well-paid directors and cinematographers to below-median production assistants. Union membership — IATSE, SAG-AFTRA, WGA — dramatically affects wages at all levels.

The Self-Employment Reality

A large share of creative industry workers are freelance or self-employed — photographers, illustrators, writers, musicians. BLS OEWS captures employed workers and may undercount the creative workforce, while also missing the high variance of freelance income. Browse all creative occupation wages.
